Early graduates of Lancair’s new Builders Workshop program are reporting more than just enormous head starts on their kit aircraft projects – they are feeling more comfortable and confident with their skills for the remainder of their projects.

The program, designed for builders of Lancair’s IV and IV-P aircraft, enables builders to come to the Lancair factory and close out their wings and tail sections – in five days or less – under the watchful eyes and helpful hands of trained company personnel. "The time saving this program offers is incredible. Builders accomplish in about five days what otherwise would likely have taken them 700 to 1,000 hours," says Lancair General Manager Tim Ong. "The program shaves nearly a year off the project."

The decreased build time is a major attraction for most IV and IV-P builders, but they are also completing the program with an added bonus – confidence. "The time we saved and the confidence and experience we gained with the builder-assist program were invaluable," said Michael J. Hawkins and David Gordon - IV-P builder

Lancair started the program on a trial basis last fall and has since graduated 20 builders. The Builders Workshop program is now running at full capacity with two projects on-site per session.

In addition to the Builders Workshop program, Lancair has also introduced firewall-forward Fastbuild and engine kits in the last year that reduce engine installation time to about eight hours from the previous average of 100. With these kits, the builder literally needs only to bolt on the engine, connect the wiring and attach the propeller.

"Lancair has been a leader in the kit aircraft industry in developing ways for builders to get their projects out of the garage and into the air more quickly," says Ong. "This program, combined with our other Fastbuild advancements, is enabling our customers to complete aircraft like the IV and IV-P in as little as 12 months."
